Egypt Islamists take two-thirds of 2nd-round vote (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt's two leading Islamist parties won about two-thirds of votes for party lists in the second round of polling for a parliament that will help draft a new constitution after decades of autocratic rule, the election committee said Saturday.

The party list led by the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) won 36.3 percent of the list vote, while the ultra-conservative Salafi al-Nour Party took 28.8 percent, pushing the liberal Wafd party into third place.

The vote, staged over six weeks, is the first free election Egypt has held after the 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak, who routinely rigged polls before he was overthrown by a popular uprising in February.

The West long looked to Mubarak and other strongmen in the region to help combat Islamist militants, and has watched warily as Islamist parties have topped votes in Tunisia, Morocco and now Egypt.

Parliament's prime job will be appointing a 100-strong assembly to write a new constitution which will define the president's powers and parliament's clout in the new Egypt.

Second-round results for party lists gave the liberal Wafd Party 9.6 percent of the vote. The Egyptian Bloc of mostly liberal and leftist parties won 7 percent of the list vote.

Analysts say poor coordination among non-Islamist groups has divided the liberal vote, sometimes handing the majority to an Islamist by default.

TRANSITION

The election, which began on November 28 and ends on January 11, has been marred by a flare-up of clashes in Cairo between police and protesters demanding an immediate end to military rule.

At least 17 people were killed in the protests, in which troops clubbed women and men even as they lay on the ground.

The ruling army council fuelled suspicions it wanted to hang on to power, even after a new president was elected, when its cabinet last month proposed inserting articles in the new constitution that would have shielded it from civilian scrutiny.

The army took over after Mubarak was ousted and remains in charge until a presidential election in mid-2012, but parliament will have a popular mandate that the military lacks.

In the first round of the poll, the Brotherhood's FJP won about 37 percent of list votes and Nour about 24 percent.

The complex electoral system gives two-thirds of the 498 elected seats to lists and the rest to individuals.

The FJP said it had won 40 of the 60 individual seats up for grabs in the second round, similar to its first-round showing.

Suicide attacker kills 7 at Baghdad checkpoint (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A suicide bomber set off a car bomb Monday at a checkpoint leading to the Iraqi Interior Ministry, killing seven people and injuring 32 others, officials said.

The attack followed a series of bombings last week that killed up to 70 people in a single day, increasing fears about Iraq's future after U.S. troops withdrew this month.

Two police officers said the bomber struck during morning rush hour, hitting one of many security barriers set up around the ministry's building. Five policemen were among the dead, they said.

Two doctors at nearby hospitals confirmed the causality figures. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information.

No one has claimed responsibility, but suicide attacks are the hallmark of the al-Qaida in Iraq terror group.

U.S. and some Iraqi officials have warned of a resurgence of Sunni and Shiite militants and an increase in violence after the full U.S. troop withdrawal.

Adding to Iraq's troubles is an increase in political tension stemming from a showdown between the Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and the top Sunni political leader in the country.

Al-Maliki's government has issued an arrest warrant for Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi on charges that he ran hit squads against government officials.

Al-Hashemi has denied the charges and said they are politically motivated.

Japan, China look to trade talks, debt buys

BEIJING | Sun Dec 25, 2011 5:27pm EST

BEIJING (Reuters) - Japan and China agreed to start formal talks early next year on a free trade pact that would also include South Korea, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Sunday after talks that showed the deepening bonds between Asia's two biggest economies.

Japan also said it was looking to buy Chinese treasury debt, and the two governments agreed to enhance financial cooperation.

"On a free trade agreement among Japan, China and South Korea, we've made a substantial progress for an early start of negotiations," Noda told reporters after his meeting with Premier Wen Jiabao.

China's central bank, the People's Bank of China, said on its website (www.pbc.gov.cn) that the two leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral financial market cooperation and "encourage the use of the renminbi and Japanese yen in international trade transactions between the two countries."

The renminbi is another name for China's yuan currency.

The trade talks announcement builds on an agreement between the three countries last month also to seek a trilateral investment treaty and finish studies on the proposed free trade agreement by the end of December so that they could start formal negotiations on the trade pact.

"China is willing to closely coordinate with Japan to promote our two countries' monetary and financial development, and to accelerate progress of the China-Japan-Republic of Korea free-trade zone and East Asian financial cooperation," Wen told Noda at the meeting, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry's official website (www.mfa.gov.cn).

But the regional trade negotiations could also compete for attention with Washington's push for a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), after Japan said last month it wants to join in the talks over the U.S. proposal.

CLOSER ECONOMIC TIES

Despite sometimes rancorous political ties between the two neighbors, Japan's economic fortunes are increasingly tied to China's economic growth and consumer demand.

China and Japan are also the world's first and second-biggest holders of foreign reserves. Wen told Noda that closer economic ties were in both countries' interests.

"The deep-seated consequences of the current international financial crisis continue to spread, and the complexity and severity of global and world developments have exceeded our expectations," Wen said.

"China and Japan both have the need and conditions to join hands more closely to respond to challenges and deepen mutually beneficial strategic relations."

China has been Japan's biggest trading partner since 2009.

In 2010, trade between the two nations grew by 22.3 percent compared to levels in 2009, reaching 26.5 trillion yen ($339.3 billion), according to the Japan External Trade Organization.

In a statement issued after the two leaders' meeting, the Japanese government said it would seek to buy Chinese government bonds -- a tentative step toward diversification of Tokyo's large foreign exchange reserves that are believed to be mostly held in dollars.

China central bank said the two governments agreed to support Japanese businesses issuing yuan bonds in Tokyo and other markets outside of China, and Japan Bank for International Cooperation would begin a pilot scheme for issuing yuan-denominated bonds in mainland China.

The People's Bank of China also said it will support Japan in using the yuan for direct investment in China.

But Japanese officials have stressed that Japan's trust in dollar assets remains unshaken, and the scale of the planned purchase of Chinese government bonds will be small.

Wen and Noda also agreed to set up a framework to discuss maritime issues after diplomatic ties deteriorated sharply last year following Japan's arrest of a Chinese fishing boat captain near disputed isles in the East China Sea.

Bilateral meetings attended by vice ministers and senior officials from relevant ministries will be held periodically to exchange views, in an effort to prevent a similar row from happening.

"On maritime matters, we have successfully set up a channel to solve problems through multi-layered dialogue," Noda told reporters.

Chris Tina Bruce: 'LGBT' Transforming into Alphabet Soup?

LGBTQIAAP: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, allies, and panseuxal

Really? Are we trying to communicate a message or create alphabet soup?

As a newbie to the LGBT community, I felt it was my responsibility to learn the history and understand how we came to be where we are and how I can help move us forward. These are the majority of acronyms and definitions (based on GLAAD's glossary of terms), even with some disagreement within our community:

  • Lesbian: a woman whose enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction is to other women. Some lesbians may prefer to identify as gay, or as gay women.
  • Gay: the adjective used to describe people whose enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attractions are to people of the same sex (e.g., a gay man, gay people).
  • Bisexual: an individual who is physically, romantically, and/or emotionally attracted to men and women.
  • Transgender: an umbrella adjective for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. The term may include, but is not limited to, transsexuals, cross-dressers, and other gender-variant people. Transgender people may identify as female-to-male (FTM) or male-to-female (MTF). Transgender people may or may not decide to alter their bodies hormonally and/or surgically.
  • Queer: traditionally a pejorative term, "queer" has been appropriated by some LGBT people to describe themselves. However, it is not universally accepted even within the LGBT community and should be avoided unless quoting or describing someone who self-identifies that way.
  • Questioning: the adjective used to describe people who are unsure of their sexual orientation.
  • Intersex: the adjective used to describe a person whose biological sex is ambiguous. There are many genetic, hormonal, or anatomical variations that make a person's sex ambiguous (e.g., Klinefelter syndrome). The term "intersex" is not interchangeable with or a synonym for "transgender."
  • Asexual: an individual who is not physically, romantically, or emotionally attracted to others.
  • Ally: a person who is not lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, or pansexual but who supports the LGBT(QQIAAP) community.
  • Pansexual: a person who is attracted to others without taking gender or biological sex into account.

Even in our own community, we are not clear on all the acronyms that represent us. If I, as a person in the LGBT community, am having a hard time understanding and knowing all the acronyms sprouting up every other month, how can we honestly expect mainstream America to understand?

Our message is supposed to about unity to obtain equality, although we cannot even communicate a clear and consistent message. I believe that we are doing ourselves a disservice by expanding our acronym for every micro group instead of projecting a simple and understandable message of equality for all.

A large percentage of mainstream America currently does not even understand the differences between sex, gender, and sexual orientation, and the expansion of additional acronyms only helps to dilute our unity and message. I experienced this lack of knowledge firsthand in my coming out. Just two years ago, while opening up to my mom after 40 years of living as her all-American, football-star and bodybuilding son, she was quite shocked, although she took it in her motherly, loving way. A few weeks (and many hours of talking about the whens, wheres, hows, etc. of being transgender) later, she made a comment that I will never forget: "So you consider yourself more female than male, but you do not like men and still date women? I do not understand." My 60-something, educated, open-minded, and loving mother, like many others, really did not understand the difference between sex, gender, and sexual orientation.

A common misconception is that gender and sex are the same. Wrong. Sex is based on the reproductive organ supplied at birth, whereas gender is the mental perception you have of yourself, and then there is sexual orientation, or your sexual preference (e.g., heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, etc.). In other words, your sex is between your legs, your gender is between your ears, and your sexual orientation is between your sheets. I produced this video to help explain the differences between sex, gender, and sexual orientation for my family and friends.

For the large majority of our population, gender and sex are congruent, and they are heterosexual. For example, Johnny is born with male sex organs, his gender (the way he perceives himself) is male, and his sexual orientation is heterosexual. I, being giftedly gendered, was born with male sex organs, but my gender is more female than male, and my sexual preference has always been toward women. So then am I a trans lesbian? Do we now add another letter to our ever-expanding alphabet soup? I say no. I prefer to the win the war of equality and will sacrifice a few small battles, as the movement is about us, not about me. So let's keep the LGBT a clear, united, and simple message of equality for all.

Be Bold, Be Proud, Be Yourself.

Prosecution to present its case against Manning

(AP) ? The prosecution will start presenting its case Saturday against the young soldier blamed for the largest leak of classified material in American history.

The long-awaited court-martial of Pfc. Bradley Manning may hinge on whether the U.S. government overzealously stamped "secret" on material posing no national security risk.

The trial is moving ahead after the defense asked the presiding officer to step aside because of alleged bias. Lt. Col. Paul Almanza rejected the request.

Manning is a one-time intelligence analyst stationed in Baghdad who is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of sensitive items: Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, State Department cables and a classified military video of a 2007 American helicopter attack in Iraq that killed 11 men, including a news photographer and his driver.

Obama raises Russia election flaws with Medvedev (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The White House says President Barack Obama has raised questions about Russia's disputed elections in a phone call with President Dmitry Medvedev (dih-MEE'-tree med-VYEH'-dyev).

Obama also welcomed Medvedev's commitment to investigate the allegations of problems with the elections, and he praised the response of Russian authorities in allowing demonstrations to occur throughout Russia. Obama told Medvedev that it's an "expression of civil society" that is consistent with Medvedev's goal of modernizing Russia.

A fraud-tainted parliamentary vote Dec. 4 has sparked the largest public outpouring of anger that Russia has seen in a generation.

According to an account from White House press secretary Jay Carney, the discussion between the two leaders occurred Friday when Obama spoke with Medvedev to congratulate him on an invitation to join the World Trade Organization.

Venezuela to send drug kingpin to U.S. - source (Reuters)

CARACAS (Reuters) ? Venezuela will extradite one of the region's most-wanted drug traffickers to the United States on Thursday, a Venezuelan government source said.

Maximiliano Bonilla Orozco, a 39-year-old Colombian who had a $5 million bounty on his head and was better known by his alias Valenciano, was captured in the central Venezuelan city of Valencia late last month.

His arrest had been announced by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and his Colombian counterpart, Juan Manuel Santos, who touted it as proof their ideologically-opposed governments were united in the fight against organized crime.

He is accused of shipping tonnes of cocaine to the United States with the help of Mexico's feared Zetas cartel.

"The DEA (U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency) is coming to take him to the United States," a source at Venezuela's Justice Minister told Reuters on Wednesday.

According to U.S. authorities, Valenciano's gang used a network of warehouses and front companies producing legitimate goods to mask the transport of illegal narcotics.

Venezuela's government says it has greatly increased its number of arrests of traffickers and its seizures of drugs since it expelled DEA officials from the South American country in 2005, accusing them of spying.

Sprint: 26 million devices with Carrier IQ, but we only ping a fraction at one time

Sprint

Update: Sprint says it's no longer using Carrier IQ

Sprint, in its reponse to U.S. Sen. Al Franken over its use of the Carrier IQ software, goes into great detail about how and why it needs and uses such analytic data, reiterating that "The Carrier IQ diagnostic tool can help Sprint engineers understand the functionality (or not) of handset appliations when connecting with the network and steps that Sprint might take to improve services ..."

Sprint also told Franken that it has Carrier IQ installed on some 26 million devices, but that the Carrier IQ software doesn't actually collect any data until Sprint itself tells it to. In fact, says Sprint, only 1.3 million devices -- that's 5 percent of the 26 million total -- may be "tasked" to collect data at a given time. And, Sprint says, that number often is much lower -- 30,000 -- when responding to specific research requests.

Sprint didn't spell out exactly which of its devices use Carrier IQ -- which has been in service of the carrier since 2006 -- but we've already seen answers from HTC and Samsung. (Motorola's are forthcoming.) The phones listed thus far include:

  • Samsung: Moment, Epic 4G, Intercept, Transform, Galaxy Tab (original 7-inch), Galaxy Prevail, Replenish, Conquer 4G, Transform Ultra (Boost Mobile), Epic 4G Touch
  • HTC: Snap (Windows Mobile), Touch Pro 2 (Windows Mobile), Hero, EVO 4G, EVO Shift 4G, EVO 3D, EVO Design 4G

Sprint also told Franken that it does not share any of the data it receives with third parties, that it "is used internally for Sprint's own use, for analysis by Sprint employees and contractors to assist wtih device certification and functionality on its own network, for network maintenance and improvement." But, Sprint added, "In the course of certifying device funcationality, prior to selling phones to customers, Sprint does share and receive certain testing results with handset manufacturers." The emphasis there is ours. Anything it shares with the manufacturer comes before it's in your pocket. Sprint also indicated that it does nto share any Carrier IQ data with law enforcement.

Sprint also explained how long Carrier IQ data is stored. Carrier IQ itself stores some of the data on its services for "approximately 30-45 days." Sprint keeps some data on its own servers for 6 months or so, and stores aggregated reports from Carrier IQ for 12 months (varies depending on the analysis being conducted, Sprint says).

Probably our favorite part of Sprint's repsonse, though, comes from a footnote in its introductary statement, wherein Sprint reminds us all that it already knows the cell site you're using, the people your calling and texting, and the websites you're visiting. It has to to be a carrier, and you're paying it to do so. Here's the full passage:

"Similarly, we know the cell site on which a phone is registering its location, which is necessary for the delivery of voice and data services. We also know the telephone numbers to which our customers initiated a call or sent a text. Such data is necessary to deliver communications services. In many cases the data collection is required by law and regulations."

What Do Barack and Michelle Obama Watch on TV?

Even the leader of the free world needs his DVR.

He just got it installed, according to People Magazine, and on it are a pair of premium cable dramas. President Obama loves Showtime's critically acclaimed new spy thriller Homeland, starring Claire Danes, and HBO's Boardwalk Empire.

As for what he watches with the kids?

Obama Family

With its multi-cultural, 21st Century appropriate casting, Modern Family is the pick. Not just because it's a good answer, either - the show is pretty darn funny.

"For the girls and me, Modern Family, that's our favorite show," the Prez says.

Asked if they lets daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, use Facebook, Barack and Michelle Obama say they do not, but that it is not a hard decision to enforce.

Their theory is, "Why would we want to have a whole bunch of people who we don't know knowing our business? That doesn't make much sense," she says.

But when the First Lady points out the relatively young ages of their daughters, the President laughs and adds, "We'll see how they feel in four years."

Source: W.Va. mine disaster yields $210M agreement (AP)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. ? The West Virginia coal mine blast that killed 29 men has yielded a wide-ranging and historic $210 million settlement proposal to compensate victims' families, pay fines and improve underground safety in response to the worst U.S. coal mining disaster in decades, an attorney with knowledge of the settlement told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The agreement between federal authorities and the new owners of the Upper Big Branch mine includes $46.5 million in criminal restitution to the miners' families, $128 million to fund cutting-edge mine safety upgrades, research and training, and $35 million in penalties for federal mine safety violations. It also does not prevent the future prosecutions of individuals on criminal charges in the April 2010 blast.

The person was not authorized to talk about the details before an official announcement and asked for anonymity. U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin, of West Virginia's southern federal court district, has scheduled a Tuesday morning press conference at the Robert C. Byrd U.S. Courthouse in Charleston.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, meanwhile, expected to brief the victims' families and then the media Tuesday on its final report from the disaster. Federal investigators have previously blamed the Raleigh County blast on a combination of methane gas, coal dust and broken or malfunctioning equipment in the underground mine.

Massey Energy Co. operated Upper Big Branch through a subsidiary at the time of the explosion. The Virginia-based Massey has since been acquired by rival Alpha Natural Resources, which reached the sweeping agreement with federal officials.

Alpha has agreed to pay $35 million for all citations against Massey's former mines, including $10.8 million in violations that MSHA will announce in Tuesday's investigative report.

The $46.5 million in criminal restitution aims to guarantee that the families of the 29 miners and two co-workers who survived the explosion each receive $1.5 million. Several families have already received this portion of the agreement, by settling with Massey in the months following the disaster.

The Virginia-based Alpha will also invest $48 million in a mine, health and safety research trust, and another $80 million to improve safety at all of its underground mines with the latest technology and equipment. The upgrades include sufficient workers and gear to coat mines with crushed limestone to dilute the explosive coal dust that accumulates during mining.

These investments will also fund a state-of-the-art training center in southern West Virginia that will host a laboratory capable of testing safety conditions in ways that would be too dangerous to attempt in actual mines.

Alpha has also agreed to audit all of its underground mines, correct any shortcomings found within 90 days and report those results to federal officials. The company must similarly share the findings of its internal investigation into the disaster.

The agreement appears to be among the largest resulting from a U.S. mining disaster. The settlement is sizable by Massey standards. In 2009, Massey and subsidiary Aracoma Coal Co. agreed to pay $4.2 million in criminal fines and civil penalties related to a January 2006 fire that killed two miners at the Alma No. 1 mine.

Don Bragg and Ellery Elvis Hatfield died after getting lost as they tried to flee the sprawling underground Logan County mine. Their widows had settled a wrongful death lawsuit for undisclosed terms in 2008. Four mine supervisors later pleaded guilty to federal misdemeanor charges that they failed to lead crews on required escape drills at various times in 2005 and 2006.

Gary Quarles, whose son Gary Wayne died in the explosion near Montcoal last April, said he wasn't told about the purpose of the Tuesday morning teleconference, but he was hoping for criminal indictments.

"Somebody's got to pay for what's been done," he told The Associated Press late Monday.

Quarles, a miner for nearly 40 years and a former Massey employee, had been inside Upper Big Branch and knew that his son faced bad conditions every day he went to work. But in the eight months since the blast, previous MSHA briefings and comprehensive reports by independent investigators and the United Mine Workers of America have revealed "it was worse than what we thought ? a lot worse," he said.

The United Mine Workers of America, the nation's largest coal miners' union, said last month that conditions were so dangerous that Massey executives and managers should be prosecuted for "industrial homicide."

MSHA's final report is likely to include a list of specific violations that contributed, but the agency also refused to comment on the report before its official release. Nor would officials there answer questions about the settlement.

Alpha, which bought Massey and Upper Big Branch in June, has said it's still reviewing the explosion but hasn't indicated whether or when it might issue a report. The state mine safety office, meanwhile, expects to complete its report by the end of January.

But all the reports so far agree on the mechanics of what happened: Poorly maintained machines cutting into sandstone created a spark that ignited both a small amount of naturally occurring methane gas and a massive accumulation of explosive coal dust. Malfunctioning water sprayers allowed what could have been a small flare-up to become an epic blast that traveled seven miles of underground corridors, doubling back on itself and killing men instantly.

All three also say the explosion could have been prevented or contained. Had the mine been sufficiently dusted with pulverized limestone to render the coal dust inert, the spark wouldn't have had the fuel to propagate.

Ainol launches the NOVO7, the world's first Android 4.0 tablet, for $100 plus shipping

Just as we were geeking out to the Jaguar 7's Ice Cream Sandwich demo and anxiously awaiting the Transformer Prime, Ingenic and MIPS completely took us by surprise by announcing the Ainol-branded NOVO7, the very first commercially available tablet with Ice Cream Sandwich officially loaded. To be specific, the device isn't brand new -- it's been previously available as a Honeycomb tablet and is now shipping with ICS pre-loaded. It's packing an Ingenic JZ4770 mobile applications processor and 1GHz MIPS-based XBurst CPU, which means this Android 4.0 slab isn't going to be the toughest workhorse in the market. What more would you expect from a $99 tablet? The Novo7 also comes with a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, a Vivante GC860 GPU clocked at 444MHz, 1080p video decoding, rear 2MP camera with VGA front-facing cam, USB 2.0, HDMI 1.3, microSD slot and an endorsement from Andy Rubin himself. If temptation is just too much to overcome, you can head over to the More Coverage link to order one. However, if you'd rather wait a while to save a few bucks in shipping -- it's over half the cost of the tablet itself -- MIPS informed us that it'll be coming to the States and other parts of the world over "the next several months," and 8- and 9-inch versions of the NOVO are in the works as well. Head below for a video and press release. Oh, and existing NOVO7 customers may be wondering why their tablet hasn't received ICS yet; MIPS assured us that there's an upgrade path for those customers as well, though no announcements have been made.

Zoologger: Chill out with the world's coldest insect

Zoologger is our weekly column highlighting extraordinary animals ? and occasionally other organisms ? from around the world

Species: Belgica antarctica
Habitat: putting penguins to shame on the west Antarctic peninsula and surrounding islands

Antarctica is busy enough in summer, but in winter it's virtually deserted. Male emperor penguins huddle together incubating their eggs, their mates hundreds of kilometres away at sea. Some Weddell seals also hang around, and there is plenty of life in the water beneath the ice sheets. But the continent itself is close to uninhabitable during the long polar night.

However, an unlikely long-term resident can be found lurking in the snow of west Antarctica. The Antarctic midge is the only insect to spend its entire life on the continent, despite being regularly frozen, dried out and sprayed with salt water.

They are so resilient, in fact, that they can survive even if they lose over two-thirds of their body water. That's almost certainly a record for an insect, and allows them to claim a unique title: no insect lives further south.

Two years of refrigeration

Well, actually one does, but it is cheating. A flea called Glaciopsyllus antarcticus has been found further south, but that's because it's a parasite that lives on seabirds. Antarctic midges do not stow away on the skin of warm-blooded animals: they survive the hard way.

They spend most of their lives as larvae, typically taking two years to reach adulthood (see photo). The 5-millimetre-long adults eat nothing and survive only 10 to 14 days, during which time they must mate and (if they're female) lay eggs. Males outnumber females six to one, so the competition for mates is fierce. The adults must have access to liquid water and a reasonably moist habitat or they die.

It is the larvae that are the tough nuts. They must survive not just the Antarctic summer, which is quite cold enough, but also the depths of the winter. Nicholas Teets of Ohio State University in Columbus is trying to find out how they cope.

During the three-month Antarctic summer, life is good. The larvae feed on flourishing algae and other microorganisms. They make their homes near penguin and seal colonies, which produce a lot of effluent for the algae to eat. Many sites are close to the shore, so the larvae are often sprayed with bracing sea water.

The larvae can cope with a wide range of stressors, many of which would kill other insects. Instead, the stress toughens them up: tipping them into sea water helps them tolerate freezing and dehydration, while dehydrating them in turn helps them shrug off both heat and deep freezing.

Teets says he once tried to obtain samples from some larvae by placing them in a toxic solvent that both kills cells and preserves them. But to his horror the experiment was ruined when the larvae failed to die. "24 hours later they were still swimming around in it," he says.

Freeze, larva!

When a larva feels a chill coming, it has two options. It can stay unfrozen but rapidly shed body water, or it can conserve water but risk damage from ice crystals by letting itself freeze. Most insects can follow only one of these strategies, but Antarctic midge larvae have both at their disposal.

If the larva opts to freeze it hardens its body, which protects it ? although Teets says it's not clear how. It also produces a cocktail of "antifreeze" chemicals that protects its vital organs. These include the sugar trehalose, which is also found in the tissues of plants and animals that can tolerate dehydration. Despite the gathering cold, the larva doesn't completely shut down until the temperature drops below zero.

Being frozen is not that big a risk for the animals, Teets says, because they spend the winter under rocks where it doesn't get all that cold. The real problem is loss of drinking water as it freezes. Humans die if we lose 15 per cent of our body water, but the larvae can survive a 70 per cent loss.

The larvae cope by clustering together, which minimises water loss. As dehydration sets in they start expressing different genes and change the proteins that control the shapes of their cells. Special proteins called aquaporins shuttle water around and help protect the larva's vulnerable guts.

However, Teets has found that surviving dehydration does have its costs. The larvae must burn their stores of carbohydrate to make protective chemicals, and these stores are depleted with each dehydration. In his lab, Teets found that the larvae could happily survive four cycles of dehydration and rehydration, but five was too many and killed over 35 per cent of them.

In the wild, the larvae may have to undergo several bouts of dehydration over the course of the winter. Apparently five times is too many ? tough they may be, but a larva's got to know its limitations.

Chemical warfare of stealthy silverfish: Parasites hide by covering themselves in ants' scent

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) ? A co-evolutionary arms race exists between social insects and their parasites. Army ants (Leptogenys distinguenda) share their nests with several parasites such as beetles, snails and spiders. They also share their food with the kleptoparasitic silverfish (Malayatelura ponerophila). New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Ecology shows that the silverfish manage to hide amongst the ants by covering themselves in the ant's chemical scent.

Myrmecophilous (ant-loving) silverfish live their lives in and amongst army ants. To avoid being killed or rejected from the nest the silverfish must be able to somehow persuade the ants to believe that they are not invaders. These ants have limited eyesight and live in a world of chemical cues, recognizing their colony members by scent. Christoph von Beeren and Volker Witte from the Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, collected L. distinguenda ants and M. ponerophila silverfish from the tropical rainforests of Ulu Gombak, Malaysia and found that, while the ants had 70 distinct hydrocarbon compounds on their cuticles, silverfish had none that are distinct for them. Instead, they carried the host colony scent, a phenomenon known as chemical mimicry.

By tracking the transfer of tagged hydrocarbon from host ants to silverfish, it became apparent that the latter pilfered their host's scent, preferably by rubbing against defenseless 'callows' (immature ants). To avoid ant aggression silverfish must continually top-up this scent. Isolating silverfish from the colony resulted in them losing their protective scent and being targeted for chasing, seizing and biting by worker ants, sometimes resulting in their death.

Prof. Witte explained, "It seems that silverfish and ants are engaged in a co-evolutionary arms race. The ants have equipped themselves with a complicated scent recognition system to safeguard their nest from predators and parasites. While the ants were developing their nest protection strategy the silverfish evolved elaborate behavioral patterns, pilfering the hosts own recognition cues, to outwit the ant's chemical defenses. Consequently, the silverfish have access to food and shelter in the inner part of the ants nest without giving anything in return."

Justin Bieber and Friends Help Light Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Let's face it: this is Justin Bieber's world. We merely live in it.

The superstar has been everywhere this holiday season, and not solely because some moron named Mariah Yeater sued him for paternity of her son. Bieber has released a Christmas CD and has spent weeks promoting it via talk shows, live performances and official video releases. The latest example of the latter? This duet with Mariah Carey.

So it's only appropriate that Bieber - along with friends Usher and Busta Rhymes - was featured on last night's tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Watch the teenage icon do his thing in the following two performance videos:

Putin warns West as he launches presidential bid

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin sternly warned the West not to interfere in Russia's elections, as he formally launched his campaign to reclaim the presidency in a speech Sunday before thousands of flag-waving supporters.

Putin stepped down in 2008 after two presidential terms, but kept his hold on power. He announced in September that he intended to return to the top job next year and on Sunday was formally nominated by his United Russia party.

"All our foreign partners need to understand this: Russia is a democratic country, it's a reliable and predictable partner with which they can and must reach agreement but on which they cannot impose anything from the outside," Putin told his audience.

The boisterous party congress, which was televised live, was aimed at boosting support for Putin and his party ahead of parliamentary elections one week away.

Increasingly seen as representing the interests of a corrupt bureaucracy, United Russia has watched its public approval ratings plummet in recent months. The party is still certain to win the Dec. 4 election, but is expected to lose the current two-thirds majority that has allowed it to change the constitution at will.

Putin's decision to swap jobs with President Dmitry Medvedev after the presidential vote in March, presented as a done deal at the party congress in September, also has soured the public mood. Many Russians are afraid that Putin will strengthen his authoritarian tendencies and remain in power for 12 more years to become the longest-serving leader since Communist times.

Sunday's congress began with a steel worker, a businessman, a farmer, a decorated special services officer and a noted film director standing up one after another to praise Putin as the only man capable of leading the country. The 11,000 delegates filling the Moscow sports arena chanted "Putin, Putin" and "The people trust Putin!"

Putin promised Russians stability, a word he repeated often throughout his speech. In countering criticism that he has tightened his control at the expense of democracy, Putin insisted that Russia needs a "stable political system" to guarantee "stable development" for decades to come.

"This is an extremely important task for Russia with its history of upheavals and revolutions," he said.

He used the occasion to lash out at opposition leaders, saying they had brought the country to ruin when they served in the government in the 1990s.

"They killed industry, agriculture and the social sphere," Putin said. "They stabbed the knife of civil war in the very heart of Russia by allowing bloodshed in the North Caucasus. In fact, they led the country to the brink of catastrophe, the edge of a precipice."

He said Russia wants to develop cooperation with the West, but strongly warned the United States and Europe against paying too much attention to the Kremlin's critics and providing them with financial support.

"We know that ... representatives of some countries meet with those whom they pay money, the so-called grant receivers, give them instructions and guidance for what 'work' they need to do to influence the election campaign in our country," Putin said.

"That's a wasted effort, like throwing money to the winds," he said.

He said those who provide grants to Russian non-governmental organizations "would do better using this money to pay back their domestic debt and stop conducting such a costly and inefficient foreign policy."

Putin promised his countrymen that by maintaining a steady course they would build "a strong, rich and prosperous Russia." Offering something for everyone, he pledged to make it easier to do business, to improve the educational system and health care, to raise taxes on the rich and to bolster the military.

"In the next five to 10 years we must take our armed forces to a qualitatively new level. Of course, this will require big spending .... but we must do this if we want to defend the dignity of our country, if we want to protect our sovereignty and independence, protect Russian citizens."

Putin also said he would pursue his project of forming a Eurasian Union to boost integration between Russia and its neighbors, restoring some of the links that were destroyed when the Soviet Union collapsed 20 years ago.

Best Buy-bye: Retailer bids farewell to the UK with blowout sale

While Americans plow through their cash and cards, lapping up the litany of Black Friday specials -- and readying themselves for the inevitable Cyber Monday second wave -- it looks like our trans-Atlantic cousins will also get a taste of discount joy. After a brief 18-month stint, Best Buy UK is packing its bags, and it wants to travel light. Both the online and physical stores will see prices snipped by between 10 and 30 percent, though we don't know whether this will extend to Best Buy's full product line or simply less desirable devices. Either way, the brick-and-mortar stores have been closed over the weekend in preparation. Bargain-hunting Brits should be able to grab some some cut-price Christmas treats when the eleven stores reopen on Monday.
