The newly tablet-friendly app comes with an appropriate redesign, including large tiles and show pages packed with info and options. Content is organized into individually scrollable horizontal "trays" that make navigating clips and shows simple, without a lot of jumping back and forth between separate menus and pages. There's even long press shortcuts -- simply tap and hold on a show's icon and the next episode will automatically play. OnStar's Family Link tracking package launching in mid-April (updated: hands-on)

Looks like OnStar's finally ready to go live with the Family Link program it was talking up last summer. The service, which lets family members track vehicles for the low, low price of $3.99 (on top of an existing OnStar package), is set to begin a phased rollout next month. Family Link revolves around two primary, similarly named features: Vehicle Locate and Vehicle Location Alert. The first lets concerned relatives view the vehicle's location on a map and the second sends an alert at a chosen interval, letting the vehicle's location be known via text or email. The initial roll out will be open to select subscribers in April, with more invitations hitting in June and a more complete rollout later in the year.

We went hands-on with the service at an OnStar demo in New York City, tracking vehicles in both New Jersey and Detroit. Family Link was able to locate a connected truck in Detroit in a mere five seconds, zeroing in on the vehicle's precise location at OnStar HQ in Michigan (note: we had tracked another vehicle in New Jersey a few minutes before -- that time with a roughly 20 second delay). It's not designed for constant tracking -- you won't see the car icon moving down the map as you drive -- but it appears to be an excellent solution for keeping tabs on your kids as they drive OnStar-equipped vehicles. We also took a look at those handy text vehicle location alerts, that OnStar will push directly to any mobile device or email address at user-selected intervals. Hey Luna Ladies,

Deanna here! Many of you may know my face from the front desk, while others have heard my voice over the phone. I seemed to have just appeared one day without formally introducing myself, but that is about to change.

My name is Deanna Smith, but almost all of my friends and family members call me Dee. I am a Los Angeles native, fresh to Maricopa County as of this January. New here to the Luna Fitness family but eager to get onto the fitness floor to help each and every one of you reach your goals as best as I can. I am a recent graduate of Western New Mexico University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology (Movement Science), a certified Massage Therapist (currently in the process of getting Arizona licensing) and as of Sunday 3/11/12, TRX certified. Although I am the latest addition to this gym I, myself, am no novice to the health and fitness world. I have worked with a vast amount of people in a variety of settings from athletes to individuals with Developmental Disabilities, in homes, training rooms, physical therapy offices and out in the community.

I believe it is necessary to be able to relate because no one wants a coach that has never played the game before. With that being said, to gain a better understanding of how I can help you look and feel as good as possible I have decided to try all the services Luna Fitness of Tempe has to offer. From Body Wraps and spray tans to Pilates Reformer, I am going to experience them all. I want you guys to guide me through each process as I stumble my way through Augusta's Zumba class, kick box with Sue, and get stretched by Emily. I am also counting on you ladies to help me prepare myself for each task.

Size Doesn't Matter When it Comes to the Pet-Owner Bond | The ...

One of my professors in veterinary school told me I was very brave when I told her I was taking a job at a hospital that deals mainly with rabbits and other exotic pets. I didn?t think much of her comment at the time, because I had been a veterinary assistant for two years prior and did not experience many problems during that time.

Fast-forward four years, and I have since seen out my contract with that hospital, completed a Master of ?Veterinary Studies in Conservation Medicine, and switched to working primarily with dogs and cats. This has placed me in a unique position to compare my experiences working with exotic pets, wildlife and traditional pets. I have found that ?bravery? was not the main attribute required in working with exotic pets. There are, however, several other attributes that will serve an exotic pet practitioner well:

1. Curiosity
   We?ve all heard the proverb ?curiosity killed the cat,? but in the case of exotic pets, curiosity is more likely to save a life. Many problems with exotic pets result from the lack of proper care and diet, and one thing I have learned working with exotics, is that detailed questions must be asked of any client owning an exotic pet, to ensure that their care of the pet is not what is causing the symptoms displayed by the pet itself.
2. Resourcefulness
   When the care and diet provided are not suitable for the pet in question, providing the right advice becomes critical. It may be impossible to remember what every single species of exotic pets requires, but having the resources to look it up when required is invaluable.
3. Empathy
   There is a school of thought that exotic pets do not form the same bond with their owners as dogs and cats do, but that could not be further from the truth. Many young children do not shed a tear when their family dog is being euthanized, but will do so for their own pet hamster. Rabbits display a wide variety of affectionate behaviors that their owners will spend a lot of time recounting during a consult. And guinea pigs make different noises under different circumstances, which their owners very quickly pick up on. Rat owners are also very committed to their pet?s health and well-being, and will go to any extent to save their beloved friend. What I have learned from working with exotic pets and their owners is that I need to draw on my own experiences owning such pets and realize that I am not the odd one out in experiencing an indescribable attachment to my small furry friend. Size truly does not matter when it comes to the pet-owner bond.
4. Gentleness
   Most exotic pet species are prey in the wild and do not appreciate being roughly handled. Being gentle helps them relax and makes the physical examination much easier for the pet, the owner and the veterinarian. Gentleness also applies when surgery is performed on exotic pets. Many exotics are much smaller than traditional pets, and the veterinarian has to become accustomed to working in tight spaces, with critical organs in close proximity to the organs that are being worked with. Gentle tissue handling will result in much better surgical outcomes.

Earth Day co-found Denis Hayes and architect Jason McLellan are behind a project that aims to build the greenest office building ever.

SEATTLE?? An office building that lasts 250 years with no monthly?electricity or water?bills? It may sound like an environmentalist?s pipe dream, but it will soon be a reality, say the builders of what they hope will be the biggest office tower in the nation that produces as much water and electricity as it consumes.

Currently rising from a pit in downtown Seattle, the $30 million, six-story ?living building? is being spearheaded by Denis Hayes and Jason McLennan, who believe they can save the world one building at a time by reducing the massive energy appetites of modern cities.

"Eighty-two percent of Americans, and more than half of humanity, now live in cities -- none of which have been designed for sustainability,"?said Hayes, who?in 1970 helped create Earth Day, which has developed into the planet?s unofficial holiday.

Hayes, 67,?now heads the?Bullitt Foundation, an environmental nonprofit that intends to practice what it preaches by moving into the building when it?s completed, currently planned for November.?

The Bullitt Center, as the building will be known, is designed to use just a third of the energy consumed by?a typical office building its size. It also aims to minimize its resource footprint by generating electricity from solar power, collecting water from rainfall and treating all sewage and wastewater onsite. It also will have no parking for cars -- just racks for bikes.

It won?t be entirely off the electrical grid, so that it can make it through the periods when there isn?t enough sunlight to meet the tenants? demands. But it will later repay those withdrawals, said McLennan, 38, who is CEO of the Northwest-based International Living Future Institute.

"In the summer it gives excess energy to the (power) grid and in the winter it gets it back when we can't generate enough," he said. "It nets out at zero on an annual basis."

As for the water system, Seattle law requires the building be hooked up to its water supply but the goal is to take in enough rainwater to make ends meet.

Standard buildings are a "negative gift" to taxpayers, he said, because of the burdens they impose in terms of pollution and wasted energy.? "We clean up our own messes ... that's the big picture," he said.?

Hayes said that in addition to being self-sufficient, the building will make sense financially, explaining that while it may cost a third more to build than a traditional office building, it is designed to last centuries longer.

"We are using the Bullitt Center to explore what is possible on the cutting edge of green, using existing technology and constrained by reasonable economics," said Hayes. "Durability is key. The average building lasts 40 years, we're going for 250 years. ... It's a fundamentally different approach."

Getting the building to last 2 1/2 centuries, McLennan said, comes down to three factors: quality building materials; careful and clever detailing from the architecture firm; and high quality construction from the contractor.???

Ultimately, the partners hope to get the Bullitt Center certified under the ?Living Building Challenge,? which is run by the Living Future Institute.

In order to be certified as a living building, developments much meet benchmarks in seven performance areas. The slideshow at the top of the story?illustrates those areas, each of which includes several "imperatives," such as "car-free living" and "urban agriculture."

So far, about 140 projects are registered for the Living Building Challenge, including?a handful in Seattle. Only?four have been certified as meeting the challenge criteria so far, as many are under?construction or have not yet met the?year of occupancy necessary for?certification. Most are small projects;?a few are office buildings, but none is as large as the Bullitt Center.

Net-zero homes have been around since the 1970s, but McLennan noted that it's "much harder to achieve this in a larger building, as the larger the building the more difficult it is to generate all your own energy and harvest all your water.?Scale makes it challenging."

If the Bullitt Center is certified as a living building, it will be the largest net-zero office building in the U.S., McLennan said. A three-story? Center for Sustainable Landscapes also is under construction in Pittsburgh at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, he noted.

Here are some of the major pieces that Hayes and McLennan say will enable the building to meet the challenge:

• Solar panels?on the roof that?extend over the sides of the building will provide the electricity. (Panels have gained enough efficiency in recent years to make them operable even in places with as much cloud cover as Seattle.)
• 26 geothermal?wells, each 400 feet deep, will?pump underground air that's a constant 55 degrees into the building to help offset heating costs in winter.?

The criteria for certification, McLennan said, are "more high performing" than the standards of the better known LEED, for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,?which were developed by the U.S. Green Building Council and adopted by many developers across the country.

"It's time to move the ball farther," he said, adding that "single projects can change the way the design community thinks."

The U.S. Green Building Council said it welcomes the living building concept and has worked closely with McLennan, who also runs the council's Seattle chapter.

"It's more challenging," acknowledged Scot Horst, the council's vice president for LEED. "Most buildings that attempted but couldn't meet the (living building)?criteria were still LEED certified."

Even a cutting-edge development like the Bullitt Center can have difficulty meeting the living building benchmarks. For example, it is replacing a single-story bar and thereby covering up the views from apartments behind it.?

That would appear?to violate the Living Building Challenge's?"equity" imperative: "The project may not block access to, nor diminish, the quality of fresh air, sunlight and natural waterways for any member of society or adjacent developments."

But McLennan notes the apartments went up knowing that the Bullitt property would some day be developed. "The windows for the adjacent building were placed along an alley where development was always expected and part of city zoning for that site," he said.

Hayes said tenants will get a rent reduction in return. "It's not a perfect solution but we're doing what we can," he said.

McLennan added that the upsides -- more diversity and added jobs in the area -- outweigh?any downside.

Eco-friendly projects aren't immune to the community frictions that often greet new developments.

In Wallingford, a?neighborhood of homes and low-rise commercial buildings in Seattle, a?green developer inspired by the Bullitt project says it needs to exceed the city's height limit in order to make its building cost effective.

That has angered neighbors like Katherine Bragdon, herself an environmental activist, and put the project on hold as city government deals with the opposition.

"No developer should be given special privileges to exceed current zoning by 44 percent, impair views that belong to the public, and trump years of work and consideration that have gone into neighborhood planning," Bragdon said. "I?ve worked on a number of conservation campaigns around the country over the past two decades so I want to stress that I respect and value the green building aspect of this project. ? But I also believe that we can?t trample over one good cause (well-planned neighborhoods, public process, fair zoning) for another."

Dharun Ravi guilty of anti-gay hate crime in Rutgers spycam case

A jury finds ex-Rutgers student Dharun Ravi guilty of privacy invasion and bias intimidation ? a hate crime ? after exposing a gay roommate's sexual encounter via spycam. The message: Privacy rights count even in the social-media age.

A former Rutgers University student who used a computer webcam to spy on his roommate has been found guilty of anti-gay intimidation, a hate crime in New Jersey that could carry a prison term of up to 10 years.

In addition to this "bias intimidation" ruling, Dharun Ravi was also found guilty of privacy invasion for exposing the roommate's sexual encounter using the webcam. The New Jersey jury also convicted Mr. Ravi of tampering with evidence.

The roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide within days after learning that Ravi had said publicly via Twitter that "I saw him [Clementi] making out with a dude. Yay." The two had just started their freshman year at Rutgers.

Ravi's case drew national attention as a possible act of cyberbullying, bringing together concerns about animosity toward gays and about the rising prominence of social media forums like Twitter in daily life.

Although it's possible Ravi could get parts of the verdict overturned on appeal, legal analysts say the verdict sends a powerful message about the importance of respecting privacy rights ? and watching what one says online.

"We still have an expectation of privacy, even in a social media age," says Bradley Shear, a Maryland attorney who specializes in privacy law. The case also stands as a warning, he says, that "the balance of your life can change in 140 characters or less."

A single Twitter post can be no more than 140 characters long, yet at least two such tweets figured prominently in Ravi's case.

In the first, Ravi announced witnessing the kissing, which he and a friend saw while remotely logged into his computer's video camera.

Two days later, when Clementi asked for a second night of privacy in the dorm room, Ravi told friends via a public Twitter message: "I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes, it's happening again."

Even though no viewing of intimate activity occurred that night, and Ravi himself was at a sports practice, prosecutors said the tweet showed Ravi's intent to violate the privacy of Clementi and his friend, known in the trial as M.B.

Prosecutor Julia McClure said no viewing occurred that night because a worried Clementi shut down Ravi's computer in the room.

Although the evidence of privacy invasion may have been clear-cut, the jury's verdict on so-called bias intimidation was surprising to many observers of the trial. In part, that's because Ravi didn't seem like the archetypal antigay bully.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) ? Even though Katie Holmes, Zoe Saldana and new mom Charlize Theron were among the guests, the real stars at the inaugural 25 Most Powerful Stylists luncheon were the experts who dress them.

The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo held an intimate gathering Wednesday at Soho House to honor entertainment's most influential stylists. The event was held in conjunction with the magazine's new style issue, which ranks the top tastemakers according to their red-carpet presence, the number of nominees they've dressed and the breakout style stars they've developed.

"So many trends, so much of what sells is because of all the people here and all the actresses who work with them," said Merle Ginsberg of the Hollywood Reporter, who helped edit the magazine's second annual stylists' ranking. The issue is on newsstands now.

Jimmy Choo spokeswoman Dana Gers credited the stylists with turning the "small brand" into a coveted one that tops fashion lists.

"Bridesmaids" star Ellie Kemper, also a guest at the luncheon, said her stylist, Jessica Paster, gives her confidence to try new looks.

"Jessica just looks at me and says, 'You look beautiful,' and I'm telling you that confidence carries you so far, because it might not be something you'd normally wear on your own," said the actress, who landed on several best-dressed lists with her beaded bronze Oscar gown. "When given that assurance, suddenly you can wear something."

Paster, whose clients also include Emily Blunt and Felicity Jones, was 17th on its list.

Kate Young, who works with Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz, was No. 1, followed by Theron's stylist, Leslie Fremar, and Saldana's fashion pro, Petra Flannery.

The stylist's role has expanded since actresses became the faces of fashion, said 17-year veteran Cristina Ehrlich, who works with Penelope Cruz, Amy Adams, Tina Fey and Amber Heard. Successful stylists can now make as much as $5,000 per day.

"It's a lot about working closely with a woman to help her feel and look the best she can look for all of these events," Ehrlich said. "Also, too, part of this job now is really working directly with fashion designers and understanding and finding the right relationships with the right brands. Every designer has an idea of who they want to dress, so my job as a stylist is to take my client and bring her the best possible options by designers that I feel are appropriate for her, that are going to show her off and show them off... The stylist is really brought in to marry them together."

Indeed, the magazine cites Flannery as "a major catalyst" behind Emma Stone's Revlon contract and Mila Kunis' relationship with Dior.

Carol McColgin of Hollywood Reporter said some of the industry's most popular actresses volunteered to be photographed for the magazine's style issue: "They really wanted to make sure their stylists got the recognition they deserve."

Hollywood Reporter Publisher Lynne Segall said she expects the stylists' luncheon to become an annual event.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? When Latonya Stevens heard thunder and lightning in the distance, she knew the drill. Every time a storm drew near, her children would run to her room seeking comfort.

So Stevens turned on a hall light for the young kids as high winds began buffeting the house. Then she blacked out and awoke to find only one of the four children in sight and the house ripped apart.

She quickly assumed the worst: that a twister had carried off the other three kids.

"I was screaming for them," Stevens said Monday. "I was panicking. For a moment, I didn't know where they were."

No one knows precisely what happened, but this much is clear. The three children were in their rooms when the tornado approached. As the winds rose, most of the home's second floor was swept away. After the storm passed, the kids were found outside on the ground, one of them 100 feet away along a major highway.

"I didn't know where the children were," Patricia Stevens said. "The house was shaking, and then we heard the noise. And all of the sudden you heard the house go whap, whap, whap, whap. Just like that. Then the walls were gone. Then I said to myself, 'Is this how you're supposed to die? Are we going to die in here or what?'"

Stevens handed Ashley to the girl's grandmother while she started searching outside for her children. Neighbors began searching, too.

Sheena Redfearn and her husband, Chris, heard Stevens shouting from four doors down the street.

After the couple was sure their own children were safe, Chris Redfearn bolted outside with a flashlight and began following Jamal's voice, leaping over fences in the search for the boy.

Amber was found in the family yard under some debris. Ayanna landed in a neighbor's yard. Jamal had been tossed more than 100 feet.

The children were rushed to the hospital. Tyrone Stevens, who was contacted by family, headed to the hospital, too.

When he returned to his house the next day, he couldn't believe what had happened.

"Just looking at it, it just shook me to my core," he said. "I was devastated. Thank God everyone is OK."

But first the family must confront the trauma of the storm.

"Every time I close my eyes, I still see it," she said. "I haven't had time to deal with it. I sleep on and off. I'm more worried about the kids and how they're feeling."
