NJ men pretend to be Navy SEALs, run bogus 9/11 charity

By Brian Thompson, NBCNewYork.com

New Jersey has sued two state residents, claiming they collected tens of thousands of dollars in donations for a bogus 9/11 charity.

In the lawsuit filed Monday in Superior Court, the New Jersey Attorney General's Office claims 66-year-old Mark Niemczyk of Tinton Falls, N.J. and 40-year-old Thomas Scalgione of Manahawkin, N.J. used the money they raised for their own personal gain. It also alleges that the pair ? who both have criminal records ? failed to register the charity as required by state law.

See the original story on NBCNewYork.com.

The two men have driven throughout the state in a pickup truck painted with the names of first responders who died in the terrorist attacks. Niemczyk claimed to be an ex-Navy SEAL while he solicited donations.

When NBC 4 New York inadvertently stopped Niemczyk without recognizing him at his apartment complex in Tinton Falls Monday, Niemczyk spoke about himself in the third person.

"Whatever money I know he collects goes out," he said.

New Jersey Attorney General Jeff Chiesa?called Niemczyk's act "really reprehensible behavior, preying on the memories of the heroes who responded to the 9/11? tragedy."

Niemczyk's bogus operation was revealed over a year ago in a?YouTube video?posted by a real ex-SEAL, Don Shipley.

Chiesa is asking the court to impound the truck and order an end to the solicitations.

Charlie Sheen sitcom poised for 90-episode pickup

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Charlie Sheen says he's not insane anymore.

Instead, these are good days for the "Anger Management" star, he declares, with his FX sitcom half-way through its initial 10-episode run and poised to get an order for 90 more.

Sheen told reporters Saturday that the prospect of continuing is as "exciting as hell," and added cheerily, "I don't think 90's gonna be enough."

With the expected pickup, FX plans to bring aboard Sheen's dad, Martin Sheen, as a recurring cast member. He will play the father of Charlie Goodson, the anger-management therapist played by Charlie Sheen. The veteran movie actor, who also played President Jed Bartlet on the drama series "The West Wing," is guest-starring on an "Anger Management" episode that airs Aug. 16.

"I think that was the best episode we did," his son said.

Adding Sheen's father to the series "will give an extra dimension and make it a multi-generational family show," FX boss John Landgraf said in making the announcement.

The production schedule would call for filming a total of 100 episodes in just two years. This kind of cost-saving routine means no time for rehearsals, said executive producer Bruce Helford.

"The actors get the lines, we see the scene, the writers make changes, the actors go to makeup, cameras are blocked, we come back together and shoot the scene," he explained.

At first, the cast members "felt like basically they were on the ledge. But by the third episode, everyone found the characters to the point that the writers were following their lead," Helford said.

"I feel like how we started, we just scratched the surface ? barely," said Sheen, who arrived for his appearance at the Television Critics Association session clad in Bermuda shorts, a long-sleeve shirt and loafers without socks.

He likened his tumultuous departure from "Two and a Half Men" and the stormy aftermath last year to a dream he couldn't wake up from. Or like "a train I couldn't get off of, except that I was the conductor," he added, speaking in quick bursts and fidgeting in his chair.

He said he learned a lot from that period, including "stick to what you know." Referring to his disastrous "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option" tour in spring 2011, he got laughs from the group when he advised, "Don't go on the road with a one-man show in 21 cities without an act. "

"I'm not insane anymore," he summed up.

What's different now from Sheen's angry stretch on "Men," characterized by his much-publicized clashes with series creator Chuck Lorre?

Helford weighed in with a theory. On "Men," he ventured, "Charlie didn't really have a voice with creative input. It wasn't built that way."

On "Anger Management," Helford said he's forged a partnership with his star.

"We built this together," he said. "And when Charlie's on the stage, that's his stage. When you feel that, your creative juices are flowing, everything is better for you, because you have a say in what you're doing.

"When you don't control your destiny, things get screwed up in your head," he said as Sheen nodded.

On "Anger Management," Charlie Goodson thrives on chaos. Sheen was asked if he does, too, or if he longs for a simpler life.

"I can wish every minute for a simple life. It's not gonna happen," Sheen replied. "But I don't really look at it as chaos. I look at it as challenges."

US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, left, and Israel's President Shimon Peres, meet at the President's residence in Jerusalem, Sunday, July 29, 2012. Romney would back an Israeli military strike against Iran aimed at preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear capability, a top foreign policy adviser said early Sunday, outlining the aggressive posture the Republican presidential candidate will take toward Iran in a speech in Israel later in the day.(AP Photo/Ronen Zvulun, Pool)

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney tried to pull back Sunday from making new American policy on Iran, distancing himself from an adviser's assertion that the U.S. presidential candidate would "respect" an Israeli decision for unilateral military action to prevent Tehran from gaining nuclear capability.

Hours after the aide previewed Romney's upcoming foreign policy speech in Jerusalem, Romney backpedaled and said, "I'll use my own words and that is I respect the right of Israel to defend itself and we stand with Israel. We're two nations that come together in peace and that want to see Iran being dissuaded from its nuclear folly."

The address by the Republican challenger to President Barack Obama was promoted as the centerpiece of a weeklong trip abroad designed to burnish his foreign policy credentials and highlight his ability to lead on the world stage. But the mixed signals on Iran could undermine that goal.

"Because I'm on foreign soil, I don't want to be creating new foreign policy for my country or in any way to distance myself from the foreign policy of our nation, but we respect the right of a nation to defend itself," the former Massachusetts governor told CBS' "Face the Nation" a few hours before the speech.

Obama has affirmed the right of Israel to defend itself, while also warning of the consequences of an Israeli strike on Iran.

"Already, there is too much loose talk of war," Obama told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in March. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and to sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

The Romney adviser, Dan Senor, told reporters earlier in previewing the address that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision." He said Romney is careful to note that he believes preventing nuclear "capability," not just a nuclear weapon, is critical.

Senor later clarified his comments in a written statement, saying that the candidate "believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded."

Romney said in the interview that "we should use every diplomatic and political vehicle that's available to us to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear-capable state. Those actions should be executed with the greatest speed we could muster. ... If all those options fail then we do have other options and we don't take those other options off the table."

Romney has said he will do "the opposite" of what Obama would do in his approach to Israel. The Obama administration hasn't ruled out the military option, but Obama has so far been relying on economic sanctions and diplomatic negotiations to discourage Iran from building a nuclear bomb.

"Are there differences between us? Of course. But being on foreign soil, particularly being here in Israel, this isn't the time for me to draft those out," Romney said.

In his speech, the candidate tells Israelis that "make no mistake: The ayatollahs in Tehran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object, and who will look the other way."

According to excerpts released by the campaign before the speech, Romney says his message "to the people of Israel and the leaders of Iran is one and the same: I will not look away; and neither will my country."

While the address was before an audience of Israelis, the message was aimed squarely at Jewish and evangelical Christian voters in the United States as he tried to highlight policy differences with Obama.

He says the nuclear threat has increased in recent years and that Iran's claims that its program is for peaceful purposes "are belied by years of malign deceptions."

"The conduct of Iran's leaders gives us no reason to trust them with nuclear material," he says in the speech, which followed a series of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian officials.

Romney, who received a warm welcome Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has said he has a "zero tolerance" policy toward Iran obtaining the capability to build a nuclear weapon.

Pentagon officials have spoken publicly about the difficulty of such a strike and American officials have expressed concern about the destabilizing effect such military action could have in the region, even if carried out successfully.

Iran says it is not interested in nuclear weapons and its nuclear program is for peaceful, civilian purposes. The Israelis say they are considering a strike because they fear Iran could be moving its nuclear enrichment sites further underground, out of reach of the weapons Israel has available.

Romney's embrace of Israel was on display Sunday as he met with leaders and visited the Western Wall, one of the holiest sites in Judaism.

Wearing a yarmulke, the candidate was mobbed by worshippers as he walked down to pray and place a note into one of the wall's crevices.

Earlier, Netanyahu welcomed Romney as "a representative of the United States" and told the Republican that he agrees with his approach to the Iranian nuclear threat.

"Mitt, I couldn't agree with you more," Netanyahu said.

"We have to be honest and say that all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota. And that's why I believe that we need a strong and credible military threat coupled with the sanctions to have a chance to change that situation," Netanyahu said.

Romney also met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Iran's nuclear program has become the most pressing problem for the U.S. and Israel. Republicans have criticized the Democratic president for putting too much pressure on Israel in the peace process and being too weak on Iran.

Obama rejects the criticism, and his aides point to what they call unprecedented U.S.-Israeli security cooperation.

Romney arrived in Jerusalem on Saturday night after a difficult few days in Britain, where he made the mistake of criticizing the host country's management of the Olympic Games. The gaffe undermined the stated goal of his weeklong journey through Britain, Israel and Poland ? emphasizing America's ties with longstanding allies.

How Can Social Media Better Support a Community in Mourning?

In the days that followed, we came together as a community and developed a very clear sense that this was our tragedy?that, really, no one else was welcome. The local journalists were overwhelmed by the national media, who set up giant satellite trucks to broadcast live from our parking lots, quads, and pathways. Our administration put up signs informing faculty that we had the right to ask the media to leave our classrooms. I heard from a student that some reporters had passed themselves off as fellow Hokies, listened to the stories of students, and cried beside them before revealing that they were with the media. Interviews were conducted in which students were asked leading questions about how angry they were at our administration. Most of us had strong feelings of sadness and solidarity?even, in many cases, with Cho Seung-Hui, the 33rd victim, whom our community had also failed. But toward the national media machine?there we felt anger.

The world?s leading social network announced results for its last quarter that confirmed its revenue growth is slowing and its profit margin is smaller than a year ago. And even though top executives voiced high hopes for selling new kinds of ?social? advertising, investors drove?Facebook?s?stock price down in after-hours trading ? to its lowest point since a controversial Wall Street debut that also disappointed investors.

?The bottom line of this call is that?Facebook?is no Google,? said Karsten Weide, a social media analyst with the IDC research firm. Internet search giant Google reported its profit and sales both doubled in the first earnings period after its 2004 stock market debut.

Facebook?said its revenue grew 32 percent from a year ago, as the company took in $1.18 billion for the quarter ending in June. The company had a net loss of $157 million, after taking $1.3 billion in charges for employee stock grants. After factoring out those one-time charges,?Facebook?reported earnings of 12 cents a share.

The results were just slightly better than analysts had forecast. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters predicted, on average, that?Facebook?would report earnings of 12 cents a share, excluding one-time charges, on revenue of $1.15 billion.

But in terms of growth,?Facebook?was unable to match the 107 percent revenue increase that it reported a year ago. And while?Facebook?reported 955 million monthly active users, up more than 25 percent from a year ago, that fell short of the 50 percent increase in users the company reported in July 2011.

Facebook?also said it delivered 2 percent fewer ads to users in the United States, as more people shifted to using the social network on smartphones and mobile devices, where?Facebook?only recently started selling ads on an experimental basis.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in some of his first public remarks since the company went public in May, sought to assure investors that?Facebook?is focused on delivering ads and other products to mobile users, whose numbers grew by 67 percent, to 543 million, over a year ago.

?Mobile is a huge opportunity for?Facebook,? he said during a conference call with Wall Street analysts.

Gov: NYC utility, union strike deal to end lockout

NEW YORK (AP) ? The threat of a severe storm hitting New York City caused Gov. Andrew Cuomo to intervene in a labor dispute between Consolidated Edison and its unionized workers, resulting in a tentative agreement Thursday between the two sides after a weeks-long standoff.

"You don't want a storm hitting New York City without Con Ed being at full force," Cuomo said at a press conference announcing that an agreement had been reached.

Terms of the four-year agreement were not disclosed, since it must be taken back to the union's executive committee and the membership, as well as to Con Ed's board.

The previous contract between Con Ed and Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America had expired on June 30, with Con Ed locking out about 8,500 employees just hours later. Among the points of contention had been pensions and health care.

The lockout continued even as high temperatures stifled the city on several days. But Thursday night was expected to bring severe thunderstorms, with damaging winds and hail, to the city and larger region.

That pushed Cuomo into getting involved, and he brought the sides together. Initially, an agreement was reached for half of the locked out employees to return to work temporarily, for the duration of any emergency and any following repairs.

The sides continued talking after that temporary agreement was reached, leading to the tentative contract agreement later Thursday.

"The Jeffersons" actor Sherman Hemsley dies at 74

El PASO, Texas (Reuters) - Sherman Hemsley, the actor who played George Jefferson on "The Jeffersons," a 1970s sitcom that was one of the first to focus on a black family's move up the social ladder, has died at age 74 in El Paso, Texas, officials said on Tuesday.

He was found dead on Tuesday, El Paso police said in a statement. An autopsy will reveal the exact cause of death, but foul play is not suspected, police said.

Todd Frank, the actor's agent, said in a statement: "He was not only a great client and actor and good friend ... he was a very loyal human being."

Hemsley's best-known role was as George Jefferson, the affluent and sometimes scheming owner of a dry cleaning business who lived in a New York luxury apartment with his wife, Louise, and a son named Lionel.

"Movin' On Up," the gospel-flavored theme song of the show, that celebrated the Jeffersons' economic rise and their claiming a "deluxe apartment in the sky," became a pop culture classic.

"The Jeffersons" was a spinoff of creator Norman Lear's show "All in the Family." In that program, the Jeffersons were introduced as the neighbors of Archie and Edith Bunker.

"With the passing of Sherman Hemsley, the world loses one of its most unique comic talents and a lovely man," Lear said in a statement.

"The Jeffersons" ran on television from 1975 to 1985. After that, the Philadelphia-born Hemsley went on to guest star in shows, including "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," and had a role in the animated series "Family Guy."

Hemsley was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1984 for outstanding actor in a comedy series for "The Jeffersons." He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Stocks set to rally on optimism over Europe

By NBC News and wire services

Stocks are set to rally at Thursday?s opening bell after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said his bank is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the single currency.

Speculation had been rising that the ECB, which holds a policy meeting next week, is considering new measures to tackle the euro zone's debt crisis as countries such as Spain and Italy struggle to fund themselves and evidence grows of a region-wide economic slowdown.

"Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me, it will be enough," Draghi told a pre-Olympic games investment conference in London.

In a reference to the high premiums peripheral European nations including Spain are forced to pay to raise funds, Draghi said: "To the extent that the size of the sovereign premia hamper the functioning of the monetary policy transmission channels, they come within our mandate."

Before the speech the problems of Spain and Greece had dominated market attention.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso is due to hold talks with Greek premier Antonis Samaras in Athens later, as a group of international lenders try to decide whether to keep releasing funds from a 130 billion euro bailout package or let the country go bust.

Barroso's visit comes after Citi economists raised the likelihood of Greece leaving the euro zone in the next 12-18 months to 90 percent from a 50-75 percent chance previously.

Investors are also worried about Madrid's ability to keep funding itself from the capital markets in the face a sharp slowdown in its economy and growing calls for help from struggling regional governments.

Spain's 10-year government bond yields edged down to around 7.2 percent, but still remain close to their euro era highs of 7.75 percent and at levels deemed unaffordable in the long term.

Before Draghi's comments, stocks were sagging amid expectations that weak economic data in the U.S. will prompt the Federal Reserve to take action to help the struggling U.S. economy.

These hopes were raised after data on Wednesday showed the biggest drop in single-family home sales in a year in June.

"Despite increasing speculation that the Fed will announce a range of measures including further QE, possibly as early as August, the underlying confidence remains fragile and volatility looks set to continue," Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor, said.

Nine things that affect your car's resale value

Mileage and mechanical condition count, but resale value hinges on a whole lot more.

By High Gear Media Staff,?Guest blogger / July 25, 2012

A worker paints price tags in the used car lot at a Chrysler car dealership in Toronto in this 2009 file photo. The resale value of your used car hinges on many factors, not just how well it runs.

Either way, both drivers face the reality of resale value, and it can be either a pleasant surprise or a cold wake-up call.

Resale value is something of a black art, mixing a car's age, its mileage, general condition, and equipment levels with less straightforward factors like popularity or supply. Most of the things that bring down resale value happen over time--but some of the features and fundamentals that can boost resale value or knock it down can be determined before you even leave the showroom.

It's simple to see how regular maintenance pays off in the end, for example--but you could be in for a surprise if you've chosen some features that weren't common just a decade ago.

To stay in control of resale value, know how these factors affect it:

Brand.?It's the painful truth for fans of some exotic brands, or even some popular nameplates known less for reliability. The first name of a vehicle can have a tremendous effect on its resale value, regardless of the condition or quality of the vehicle in question. Certain British and German vehicles are known for rapidly shrinking value, but some of the smaller Japanese nameplates lose their worth just as quickly. Among the best? Subaru, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, and?Toyota?rank atop the mass-market brands according to residual-value forecasting company ALG, while Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Mercedes and Audi fare the best in the luxury arena. These brands can retain more than 60 percent of their value after the first three years of ownership, while some vehicles from those other brands can fall to as little as 35 percent of their new value in the same time.

Drivetrains.?Some buyers may like to shift their own gears, but most buyers don't. Should you deduct value ahead of time if you order a manual transmission? "This comes with a big 'if,'" says Eric Lyman, ALG's Vice President of Residual Value Solutions. "If you're?selling?a performance sports car where enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies make up the majority of buyers of these types of vehicles....sometimes the manual transmission can be more valuable than the automatic."

In general, an automatic transmission will recoup its cost, typically between $1000 and $2000. "Automatic transmissions nearly pay for themselves as the used market value is generally comparable to the new car price of this option," he adds.

Then there's the choice between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. "Except on rear-wheel-drive?sports cars, all-wheel drive tends to add about $1000 on passenger cars, a bit more onutility?vehicles?and up to a few thousand on?pickup trucks. Depending on the price in the new market this can be a worthwhile upgrade. This is especially true in regions where inclement weather makes all-wheel drive a valuable safety feature."

One surprise? All-wheel drive now shows up as a worthwhile resale item in the southern and coastal states, where wintry weather isn't a concern. "Even in the 'smile states,' all-wheel drive can add sporty driving dynamics to a front-wheel-drive vehicle, while also adding safety in the occasional downpour," Lyman explains.

Paint color.?It can bring you down--or send you sky-high, in terms of resale value. If you don't get white, silver, or black, on a traditional Camry or E-Class, you're risking a slower sale--but the color palette on most mainstream?cars?isn't that gutsy to begin with. Put a Sunset Orange Metallic hue on a?Honda Element?that's already discontinued, or go with metallic purple at the custom-paint shop, and you could be looking at not selling the vehicle at all, for lack of interested buyers.

However, picking the right collectible color on your new sportscar can send the appreciation curve through the roof. Consider the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, which offers?a $1,000 matte paint job and a hand-wash kit. If kept in excellent condition, it's likely to recoup all of that cost, since it's a limited edition--but in poor shape, that matte paint could just be a thousand-dollar liability.

AIDS experts: Focus on pregnant women not enough

Chart shows rate of women with HIV/AIDS by selected countries

(AP) ? The AIDS epidemic increasingly is a female one, and women are making the case at the world's largest AIDS meeting that curbing it will require focusing on poverty and violence, not just pregnancy and pills.

Already, women make up half of the world's HIV infections, and adolescent girls are at particular risk in the hardest-hit parts of the world, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Geeta Rao Gupta told the International AIDS Conference.

Some 4.8 million people ages 15 to 24 are living with HIV, and two-thirds are female. Sexual violence and conditions of poverty that frequently lead to girls leaving school and marrying in their teens ? often to much older men ? for economic security are chief risks in developing countries, she said.

"These adolescent girls and young women, our sisters and daughters, represent an unfinished agenda in the AIDS response," Rao Gupta said.

She echoed what has become a recurring theme of the meeting since Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton declared Monday that gender equity would be crucial to protecting women.

"Women need and deserve a voice in the decisions that affect their lives," Clinton said.

Their stories suggest too few do.

Hellen Amuge of Uganda showed scars on her arm and chest left when rebels in one of that country's wars attacked and raped her. When eventually she was diagnosed with HIV, Amuge said her husband abandoned her and their seven children.

"I'm taking my drugs, that's why you see me healthy like this," she said. But while pills are free through internationally financed AIDS programs, she described how people in her rural area must travel 50 miles to the nearest clinic for their monthly supply. "Getting money for transport is a problem."

In South Sudan, Evelyn Letio Unzi Boki said, "Men don't accept to go for testing," and their often younger, uneducated wives, dependent on them for economic survival, have no recourse.

"Women don't have voices," she said.

Even in the U.S., infections increasingly are concentrated in poor communities. Here, 1 in 4 people living with HIV is female and most are African-American or Hispanic.

The Affordable Care Act is expected to improve treatment for many uninsured Americans with HIV, but a number of states say they may not expand Medicaid services, one key part of that law. A report from the 30 for 30 Campaign, a women's coalition, found those are states with high numbers of HIV-infected women.

Globally, the women with HIV who get the most attention are pregnant, since one of the United Nations' chief goals is nearly eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The number of babies born with HIV has been dropping steadily for several years as more HIV-infected women receive AIDS drugs during pregnancy and while they're nursing ? 57 percent of them last year, according to the United Nations.

But UNICEF HIV adviser Dr. Chewe Luo called for a shift from focusing just on protecting the baby to treating the mother for her own good. Few countries automatically continue providing those lifesaving drugs for the mom after her baby is weaned, unless her own condition worsens or she gets pregnant again, Luo said.

"Orphaning will continue to increase if we don't actually provide treatment for women," she said.

New guidelines from the World Health Organization encourage countries to start treatment for life for all pregnant women, regardless of how healthy they may appear between pregnancies. Luo praised Malawi as the first low-income country to adopt that strategy and said Botswana, Rwanda, South Africa and Zambia are considering the same change.

UNICEF's Rao Gupta called for innovative solutions to help women and girls protect themselves. She pointed to an experiment in Kenya that pays poor families a few dollars a month to help support AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children. Researchers found teens in those households stayed in school longer rather than quitting to work and reported fewer risky sexual behaviors such as multiple partners and unprotected intercourse ? maybe because they weren't turning to sex for money.

And Serra Sippel of the Center for Health and Gender Equity says too many HIV prevention efforts are missed opportunities for women. Consider: Projects around Africa are pushing male circumcision, which lowers men's risk of heterosexual infection ? but they don't educate those men's wives and girlfriends about the importance of continuing condom use since the protection isn't perfect, Sippel said.

"Women are the blind spot in the AIDS conversation," she said.

Some baseball fans take their business elsewhere

Most fans attended Kinston Indians games at Grainger Stadium to soak in the old ballpark?s bucolic charm.

Built in 1949 with a roof-covered, horseshoe grandstand, the stadium lent itself to the old-fashioned joys of socializing with neighbors.

All that was fine with Lori Cahoon, an outgoing Kinston banker who did plenty of mingling with her fellow fans at K-Tribe games for more than 20 years.

But when it came right down to it, she was mostly there for the baseball.

Cahoon is one of a handful of diehard fans who, instead of simply missing the professional game in Kinston, are following it west.

For about four of every five of the Carolina Mudcats? home games, Cahoon fuels up her red Chevy Silverado pickup truck, picks up a friend or two and hits the road bound for Zebulon, just east of Raleigh. The drive takes her more than an hour one-way and usually follows and precedes eight-hour shifts at Bank of America, where she works as a manager.

But Cahoon, who served as personal banker, advisor and all-around big sister to many of Kinston?s Latin American players over its 25 years as a Cleveland Indians affiliate, doesn?t mind having her days stretched into night.

?I guess my loyalty to Cleveland is still there,? Cahoon said. ?And since we have nothing to do here in Kinston, why not go? I miss baseball, so it?s worth the drive to me.?

The Mudcats, who are playing what would have been Kinston?s 2012 Carolina League schedule had the K-Tribe not been sold and relocated, are drawing frustrated and dedicated Eastern North Carolina fans like Cahoon.

Mudcats general manager Joe Kremer has targeted the Indians? former market in some of the club?s advertising, including newspaper and radio spots. Though he doesn?t have firm numbers to confirm the strategy?s success, he believes it?s helping.

?We?ve noticed just a lot of new people here and a lot of people asking questions,? Kremer said, adding that the club did not advertise within the K-Tribe?s footprint in years past.

?We feel like we?re drawing fairly decent from down there, so we?re excited about that.?

?

Hitting the road

?

On a recent afternoon following a rare vacation day from work, Cahoon drove to Cara Hartwell?s house off Paul?s Path Road, pulled into the driveway at 5:25 p.m. and sent her friend a text.

Hartwell, an accountant from upstate New York who?s between jobs, emerged and climbed into the cab, and the two diehard fans rolled up N.C. 258 through Snow Hill, across N.C. 58 to U.S. Highway 264.

During the 75-minute drive, they laughed and chatted about a wide variety of subjects, pausing only when Cahoon ran over a paint bucket at 75 mph on 264 and had to pull over and remove it from the truck?s undercarriage.

They arrived at Zebulon?s Five County Stadium, stopped to chat with a parking attendant they?ve gotten to know and began the gravelly walk toward the will call window, where a Mudcats player had left them a pair of tickets.

After buying some refreshments and catching up with a former K-Tribe intern who now works for the Mudcats, they settled into their seats behind the home bullpen, along the third base line.

As Carolina players strolled from the clubhouse in the left field corner to the dugout, many of them threw up friendly waves at the women, who cheered when their favorites were introduced.

Cahoon, 47, and Hartwell, 49, became fast friends last baseball season. Hartwell, who moved to Kinston to live with her mother after her father died in 2010, began attending K-Tribe games by herself because, she said, ?there?s nothing else to do.?

Hartwell?s time at Grainger Stadium spoiled her; while 6,500-seat Five County Stadium is fine, she said, it lacks the small-town charm of Kinston?s 4,100-seat venue.

?The people (in Zebulon) are very, very nice. The staff is very nice. But there?s something to be said about the historical Kinston stadium,? said Hartwell, who grew up attending New York Yankees and Mets game and has been to minor league ballparks around North Carolina and Ohio. ?It is the best stadium I think I?ve ever seen, honestly. It?s just beautiful.?

Cahoon and Hartwell mix up their Mudcats experience by moving around ??especially Cahoon, who often repairs to a section in the upper deck on the third base side for its space and panoramic view.

On this sparsely populated night, they alternate between the third base side, Cahoon?s usual upper deck perch and field-level seats near the first base dugout, where they have a nice view of a vicious on-field brawl in the second inning between the Mudcats and the Winston-Salem Dash.

Alas, Hartwell was visiting with a friendly concessions worker and missed the rare melee altogether.

?

A long day

?

Ann Minkler, a former Grainger Stadium regular, sometimes carpools to Zebulon with Cahoon, Hartwell and others. Minkler estimates that she has attended at least 15 games this season, some of them on the weekends when her husband, Rocky, a truck driver, can tag along.

Even on nights when Ann Minkler can?t go, she?s there in spirit. She listens to the radio broadcast online while monitoring a live box score.

She also frequently listens to broadcasts of Triple-A Columbus and Cleveland Indians games, keeping up with Kinston players who have moved up the ranks.

It?s the next best thing to being there.

?I just want to go and support them as much as I can, even though they?re not the Indians anymore,? Ann Minkler said. ?I enjoy baseball. That?s the thing: I love baseball. I really love baseball.?

Cahoon and Hartwell showed their love by sitting through a light drizzle, yelling, ?Happy birthday, Delvi!? as Mudcats outfielder Delvi Cid, who turned 23 that night, walked to the plate.

The women will gladly wait out a rain delay and never leave before the final out is made. They happily endured the entirety of a 7-0 Mudcats loss that contained few highlights after the early brawl before making for the gate and waiting their turn to escape the congestion of the parking lot.

Cahoon, who helped the Latin players pay bills and transfer money when they were in Kinston, holds forth on social issues as the Silverado darts through the night on U.S. 70, a return route designed to minimize the possibility of hitting a deer.

The conversation shifts back to baseball and the Indians? abandonment of Grainger Stadium.

?I hate to drive by it, I swear,? Hartwell lamented as the pair neared Kinston. ?It?s just, like, heartbreaking.?

At 11:25 p.m., the truck pulls back into Hartwell?s driveway. The two say good night and Cahoon heads home. The bank opens at 9 a.m.
